Chivas Guadalajara rescued a 1-1 draw with Monterrey in a match where the VAR appeared to help Guadalajara, but in the end, they did not know how to take advantage of the error by goalkeeper Raul “Tala” Rangel to decree the final distribution of points.

The result in which the team led by Argentine Fernando Gago did not know how to take advantage of the advantage given to them by Ricardo Marin’s goal in the 27th minute which made it seem like the night would be a complete success with a better score, but in the end the goalkeeper Raul “Tala” Rangel made a mistake and opened the doors to the final tie scored by Jesús “Tecatito” Corona.

It is true that the involvement of the VAR surrounded the result of Chivas with controversy since at first glance it is not observed that the Argentine forward Lucas Ocampo did a foul on the Chivas goalkeeper, since prior to that action, the Chivas defender Antonio Briseno complained about a foul by the Mexican-American Brandon Vazquez that preceded the action of his teammate.

But as a result of this play and the intervention of referee Luis Enrique Santander from above in the VAR area, he decided to call the young referee Jesus Rafael Lopez to review the action carefully and decided that Ocampo did a foul by kicking the ball when the Chivas goalkeeper already had a hand on the ball.

Under this criterion, they decided to annul the play by invoking what is established in the rule which details that “The goalkeeper will also be in possession of the ball in his hands when: “-he holds the ball in his hands or between his hand and a surface (e.g. the ground, his own body) or when he touches it with any part of his hands or arms, except if the ball rebounds off the goalkeeper or after he has made a save.”

-hold the ball with your hand open and extended

– bounce the ball on the ground or throw it into the air. While the goalkeeper is in possession of the ball, no opponent may challenge him.

The referee, aware of this rule, made the decision to disallow Ocampo’s goal and thereby give life to Chivas, who in the 27th minute took full advantage to take the lead and then had several chances to increase their lead, but were unable to capitalize on the various actions they generated.

The actions

The rest of the action went like this, with a give and take between both teams, since Chivas had two goal opportunities with Roberto “Piojo” Alvarado and the other one with Omar Govea, but the visiting goalkeeper, the Argentine Esteban Andrada, prevented his goal from falling.

While Rayados with Lucas Ocampo, Brandon Vazquez, and Jordi Cortizo sought to respond and create danger against the Guadalajara goal, but without achieving their objective.

But when it was least expected and all seemed under control for Chivas to take the win, the play came in the 87th minute, where the Argentine Lucas Ocampo sent a change of play on a dropback from Rayados towards “Tecatito” Corona that the Chivas goalkeeper tried to cut outside the area, but he went wide and allowed them to clear their goal with the visitors’ goal.

The action of “Tala” Rangel was so innocent that it generated disbelief and anger among his teammates who went against the Rayados players in their celebration, not believing that the goalkeeper of the Mexican national team dared to come out in that way.

Corona took advantage of the gift and with that, he saved his team from defeat and also lowered the temperature of the controversy that would have been generated if they had lost due to the goal disallowed in the 9th minute by the VAR.

Thus, in summary of the actions, the draw cost Chivas dearly, since in addition to the two points that were taken out of the bag, they also lost forward Armando “Hormiga” Gonzalez due to an injury that only increased the crisis in the attack with absences such as that of its star player Javier “Chicharito” Hernandez, the Mexican-American Cade Cowell and now the young Armando Gonzalez.
