Xavier Edwards brings a bit of hope to the players who remain and will form the basis of a new reconstruction while waiting to know the name of the next player to leave the team.

The Marlins’ start hitter hit for the cycle on Sunday becoming only the 2nd player in franchise history to do so. An outstanding performance that failed to prevent the team’s 6-2 loss to the Brewers in the final game of the 3-game series that the Miami team secured on Saturday night in Milwaukee.

Edwards joined his name alongside star Venezuelan second baseman Luis Arraez, who did so first on April 11, 2023, in an 8-4 victory over the Phillies in Philadelphia.

San Diego Padres player Luis Arraez went 4-for-5 in that game. A curious fact is that both brands were established on the road. The Pike shortstop went 4-for-4 with a walk.

He opened the game with a home run to right field off the first pitch from Brewers starter Tobias Myers, the first home run of his major league career.

He then walked in the third inning, doubled to left field in the fifth, tripled to right center in the seventh inning, and earned a hit in the ninth on a hit by shortstop Willy Adames.

“This means a lot,” Edwards said after the game.

“It’s great to get my first home run in the majors leading off the game and cap it off with a single. I would have been pretty mad at myself if I didn’t get that hit. I usually get a lot of hits.”

Edwards took over at shortstop after the Marlins designated shortstop incumbent Tim Anderson for assignment in early July, and is now the first man in the lineup following the departure of Jazz Chisholm Jr. to the New York Yankees for 3 possibilities.

Chisholm and AJ Puk were the first 2 players to change jerseys and reliever Tanner Scott is expected to do so in the next few hours.

Miami (39-67) has the second-worst record in the National League while the Brewers (60-45) lead the Central Division.

Edwards leads the Minnows in average (.379), OBP (.462), and OPS (.956) after 25 games played.

This is the third such cycle this season. Rangers rookie Wyatt Langford did it on June 30 and Astros slugger Yordan Alvarez did it on July 21.

The Marlins opened the scoring in the first inning with a solo homer by Edwards, but the Brewers countered with two in the bottom of the frame on a home run by outfielder Jake Bauers that found second baseman Brice Turang on base.

The home team added a couple more runs in the fourth inning when they got a hit from Rhys Hoskins, a double from Garrett Mitchell, and two consecutive hits from Joey Ortiz and Turang.

An inning later they came back with two more runs on a home run by Jackson Chourio, a triple by Bauers and a sacrifice fly by Hoskins that brought him home.

Miami pulled one back in the seventh inning with a triple by Edwards that reached home driven in by a grounder to first base by Bryan de la Cruz.
