Bayern Munich defies statistics on its visit to the Santiago Bernabéu stadium in the second leg of the 2023-24 Champions League semi-finals, in a round in which it has not won a double away match since 2013.
The only victory was when they defeated Barcelona at Camp Nou, with a record of two wins, two draws, and nine losses at Real Madrid’s home.
In a double elimination match, you have to go back to 2013 to find the German team’s last victory at their rival’s home. They achieved it against Tito Vilanova’s Barcelona, with 0-3 thanks to goals from Arjen Robben, Gerard Piqué in an own goal, and Müller.
Bayern’s record in European qualifiers against teams from Spain is eleven wins and twelve losses. And again against Barça, last year, he improved his statistics on Spanish soil. In his last eleven visits, he was defeated six times.
When has Bayern Munich won at the Bernabéu?
At the Santiago Bernabéu, he won two visits out of 13 to date. The first was on February 29, 2000, a 2-4 with goals from Scholl, Effenberg from a free kick, Fink, and Paulo Sergio with a header after a corner kick, which nullified every attempt at a Real Madrid reaction with goals from Fernando Morientes and Raúl González.
Bayern’s second and last victory at the Bernabéu occurred 23 years ago, on May 1, 2001, 0-1 with a goal from Brazilian Élber in the first leg of a semi-final that ended in Germany.

The present is hopeful for the Madrid team, which won all of the previous 24 qualifying rounds except one, in which they tied the first leg at home. Their only setback was against Spartak Moscow in the quarterfinals of the 1990-91 European Cup, when they lost 1-3 at home after drawing 0-0 in Russia.
Real Madrid has won the five ties in which it tied two goals in the first leg. And for Bayern, it is the twelfth time that they have tied the first leg at their stadium in a European tie and ended up losing nine. They have lost three of their last four away games in the semi-finals and tied one.
